Two Victims Revealed in the Providence Campus Shooting as Authorities Press On With Manhunt for Perpetrator.

The pair of scholars who died in Saturday’s mass shooting in Providence were being remembered Monday – while an intensive search for their killer carried on following the freeing by authorities in Rhode Island of the single suspect detained in connection in the case.

Tributes for Ella Cook

Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was remembered as “a wonderful, steady, devout, shining presence”, as stated by the Advent Cathedral in Birmingham, which offered condolences for her at a gathering on Sunday.

Cook was vice-president of Brown’s branch of the College Republicans organization, as the club stated. Karoline Leavitt also shared sympathies online, remarking: “It's indescribable. Remembering her family and friends, particularly her mother and father.”

MukhammadAziz Umurzokov

The other person killed was an Uzbek national named MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, a citizen of Uzbekistan in his initial year at the Ivy League university, family members said.

The victim's identification was verified by Uzbekistan’s foreign ministry.

“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. He harbored grand aspirations of entering the field of neurosurgery and aiding others,” his sibling Samira said in a memorial statement.

The Shooting Incident

An additional nine individuals were injured in Saturday’s attack in the school of engineering of Brown’s grounds in Providence, during the school’s final exam period.

Authorities said by the end of Sunday that a man aged 24 arrested in a raid at a lodging about approximately 17 miles from the scene earlier in the day was set to be freed.

“We have a murderer out there,” stated Peter Neronha, Peter Neronha.

He added, “Investigations can lead one way, and then you must reassess and go in another, and this is precisely what occurred over the last day or so.”

Community Anxiety

The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, noted: “It is expected to provoke renewed concern for our community”.

The assailant began shooting inside a classroom in the engineering facility on Saturday, shooting over four dozen bullets from a 9mm pistol, a law enforcement official reported to the Associated Press.

Officers that entered the hotel recovered a pair of pistols and two ammunition clips when the individual was taken into custody, according to reports.

Condition of the Injured

Among those wounded, one student was released from the hospital, said the university president, Christina Paxson. An additional seven were in critical but stable condition, and one was in critical condition, authorities stated on Sunday.

Durham Academy, a independent school in Durham, North Carolina, said a recent graduate, Kendall Turner, was one of the critically injured.

Tributes were paid to Cook at a memorial in Birmingham on Sunday. A clergyman said, “Her presence was a wonderful, steady, pious glow not only here growing up... but at Brown University she was a radiant presence in that specific location as well.”

Martin Bertao, Martin Bertao, shared a message from the group. “Ella was recognized for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she aided her club and other students,” he said.

An American diplomat, Jonathan Henick, said he was “profoundly grieved” by Umurzokov’s death in a tribute. “We extend our sincere condolences to the Umurzokov family, loved ones, and fellow students and mourn the loss of his bright future.”

The weekend's murders at Brown, the nation’s seventh-oldest university with about over seven thousand undergraduate and 3,000 graduate students, occurred during one of at least 392 mass shootings recorded nationally so far in 2025, according to statistics.
