Asian fast-fashion powerhouse Shein has selected France as the place to establish its first fixed retail stores.

The brand will take over retail spaces within major stores starting in Paris, with subsequent openings in a handful of other locations in the cities of Dijon along with Reims, Grenoble, Angers and Limoges.

The French influential global fashion market was a logical option for the company's testbed for physical stores, according to the retailer.

The fashion brand is now primarily recognized for its discounted and trendy clothes, although it has received scrutiny over its environmental impact plus employee treatment.

Moving Beyond Temporary Stores

The company had earlier launched short-term retail spaces within urban centers like the Spanish and French capitals, yet never managed a permanent physical shop.

The new outlets are being launched by teaming up alongside property management company the Societe des Grands Magasins.

The French company runs both BHV Marais as well as Galeries Lafayette retail centers that will contain what the brand terms retail spaces inside larger stores.

Economic Impact and Job Creation

The new shops will create around 200 positions across France, Shein said in a statement.

Noting that this joint effort aimed to revitalise city centres and department stores throughout France.

By choosing France as the location to experiment with brick-and-mortar stores, the brand intends to serve French shoppers along with the broader retail industry, according to the company.

Web-Based Start and International Operations

The fashion retailer, serving customers in 150+ countries worldwide, has predominantly run through digital channels via its online platform and application.

Established in China sixteen years ago while being based in Singapore, the company has faced close inspection over its production of fast-fashion goods.

The business model swiftly creates affordable garments based on contemporary designs, but has drawn criticism due to its ecological consequences.

Working Conditions and Production Issues

Questions have also emerged regarding labor conditions across the brand's manufacturing pipeline.

A research study released in 2024 from the Switzerland-based group Public Eye discovered that laborers in select factories previously labored for 75-hour work weeks, despite Shein promising to improve conditions.

  • Debut physical locations from Shein on French territory

  • 200 new jobs expected to be created across the country
