Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has been granted a wild-card entry for the Australian Open, which kicks off on the 18th of January in Melbourne.

A Landmark Comeback to the Australian Courts

Tournament officials announced on Friday that the 45-year-old legend will grace the courts again at Melbourne Park a staggering 28 years after her first appearance. Back in 1998, she defeated her younger sister Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Australian Summer

The tennis star had earlier stated in the month of November her intention to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, where she was likewise awarded a special entry, two weeks prior to the Australian Open. Organizers noted that Williams is scheduled to participate in Australia's Hobart International a following week, just before the action begins at the main venue.

Her last appearance in the city was in 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the women’s singles on two occasions, losing to Serena in the finals of 2003 and 2017.

Officials indicated that Williams is set to become the most senior female player to take part in an Open's singles competition, eclipsing the mark formerly set by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she was defeated in the first round at Melbourne Park in 2015.
