Scream OG Star the Actor Is Anxious He Could Ruin the Series with the Seventh Installment.

The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters in the coming year, and it is preparing for a massive family reunion. This latest installment marks the iconic comeback of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the last entry. She will, per tradition, be alongside Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only beloved characters returning to the fray.

"Returning to a role you portrayed in your twenties when you're 55 was a challenge that kept me up at night," Lillard reveals.

A Triumphant Return for Fallon Favorites

Reports have confirmed that three different characters from past films are set to return in this new outing, even though dying in prior movies. The exact mechanism of their return remains a mystery. Fans should get ready for the reappearance of the beloved and nearly unkillable officer Dewey Riley, the director and Scream 3 antagonist Roman Bridger, and one half of the original murderous duo, Stu Macher.

The Pressure of Legendary Status

For Matthew Lillard, returning to the franchise for the first time since a brief appearance is a dream come true, even if he is terrified about the public's reaction. The actor vividly recalls the precise instant he received the news from the original writer.

"I recall the conversation. I remember the small talk. I recall him asking. That moment is indelibly imprinted on my psyche," he states. "So I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."

Stu Macher has attained iconic status in the decades since the 1996 movie premiered, which made Lillard feeling very trepidatious.

"The reality is, that's a part that lives in infamy, for better or worse," he notes. "A character that is now embodied in each and every Ghostface mask that walks around every October 31st."

The Fear of Disappointing the Fandom

Now that filming has concluded, Lillard is waiting as everyone else to see the finished film. He admits to feeling immense pressure about hoping not to be the one who ruins the beloved series.

"It's either a hit and people are excited to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard points out. "At the start, I have no idea if the film will gonna work. I am unsure if people want to see me. I've certainly seen enough people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this idea?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of pressure to not ruin the series. I don't want people leaving Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"

Speculation and Anticipation Run High

While many dedicated fans are excited for Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others return persists. Maybe they exist rent-free in Sidney's mind, similar to a previous plot device. Or, perhaps they are somehow all alive in a strange shared situation. The chance of a meta-horror story, inspired by classic genre films, also exists.

Audiences will find out the truth when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
