Manchester United Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.
A Major Acquisition for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has six months left on her contract, has been a consistent goalscorer for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing will be seen as a marquee coup for the WSL team.
Departure from Bayern was expected after she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the club's fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its top forwards. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.
Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen the Forward Line
The experienced striker's signing should represent a significant uplift to United’s forward line. Schüller has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- For seven consecutive seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Carrington
Securing the German international coincides with a period when the club appear to be building momentum.
Recent performances feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has brought additional activity:
- The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's extension, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
