I believed I nicked it - Alex Carey on review reprieve.
Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey stated he believed he had edged the ball when he was given not out on DRS during day one of the third Ashes Test against England.
After surviving on 72, Carey crafted a excellent 106 to help the Australians post 326-8 at the stumps in the Adelaide Oval.
The Incident
The home side were 245 for 6 when Carey looked to play a cut shot to the bowling of Josh Tongue.
The England team lodged a strong appeal, thinking they had detected an nick, but umpire Ahsan Raza remained unconvinced.
After captain Ben Stokes challenged the decision, the footage reviewed by third umpire Chris Gaffaney displayed a spike although this appeared prior to the ball had reached the bat.
Gaffaney also said he believed there was a clearance between the bat and the ball.
As a result, Carey was reprieved.
"I felt a little noise as the ball went past," commented Carey.
"Being given out would have prompted a review, though not a confident one. There was a definite noise."
Technology Debate
Discussion has swirled about 'the sound wave technology' during the series after a several unclear moments.
England's bowling coach David Saker indicated England may pursue this most recent incident further with match referee Jeff Crowe.
"I don't think we've done anything about it so far but after today, maybe that might go a bit further," Saker remarked.
"We've had doubts about it throughout. The focus should be on cricket, not technology failures. It is what it is."
Emotional Century
Carey's century was his first in Ashes cricket.
It was also an emotional moment for Carey, whose father passed away in September. His spouse was emotional in the crowd as the batter marked the occasion by pointing to the heavens.
"A hundred on home soil with loved ones present is unforgettable," stated Carey.
"The reason for my look upwards is clear. I'm trying not to tear up. But, no, it was great."
Previous Ashes Drama
This isn't Carey's first brush with Ashes drama.
He was the wicketkeeper who famously stumped Jonny Bairstow at Lord's Cricket Ground in the 2023 Ashes series, resulting in a heated final day.
On his reprieve he added: "Snicko obviously didn't line up. It is just the way cricket goes - sometimes you have a bit of luck."
"Perhaps luck was on my side."
